FEMS Survey - to Improve their Service

Tuesday, 28 October 2025 10:28
Federation of European Microbiological Societies

Dear ÖGMBT member,

Attila P. Sachslehner spent a month researching in Porto, Portugal, this July. Being an ÖGMBT member one benefit is to be a member in the FEBS, FEM and EFB at the same time. This way this young life scientist was able to apply for a FEBS short term fellowship. And he got it. FEBS funds travel expenses and subsistence amounting to 100€/day.

Background of the FEBS Short term fellowship

The skin of terrestrial vertebrates forms a variety of cornified appendages such as feathers, hair, or nails [1]. The development and continuous regeneration of the epidermis and the skin appendages depend on enzymes belonging to the family of transglutaminases (TGM), which crosslink proteins to establish the epidermal barrier and the rigid structures of the appendages [2]. However, while the contribution of TGMs to epidermal cornification is well studied, the roles of TGMs in skin appendages remain poorly understood, particularly in non-mammalian vertebrates such as birds. Feathers are the most characteristic skin appendages of birds which serve several purposes such as support of flight, thermo-insulation, or communication [3]. In a previous study, I established a TGM activity assay which allowed me to demonstrate that TGM activity is involved in feather development [4]. I identified nine TGM members in the genome of the bird model system, the chicken [5]. Within this FEBS short-term fellowship, I aimed to characterize the gene expression pattern of TGM genes in situ to gain a better understanding of their contribution to feather development. I planned to use hybridisation chain reaction (HCR), a next generation mRISH method, which allows to detect more than one gene simultaneously. HCR enables efficient detection of mRNA transcripts up to the subcellular level, ensures high specificity, low background signals, and allows to accurately quantify the detected transcripts [6].

Why I chose this particular host laboratory

The experimental requirements, such as regular sample supply, materials, and expertise, were not available in my home laboratory but necessary for successful conduction of the proposed task. Therefore, I applied for a short-term fellowship funded by FEBS to visit the laboratory of Dr. Miguel Carneiro (Research Center in Biodiversity and Genetic Resources – CIBIO, University of Porto, Portugal) for one month. Dr. Carneiro’s group is among research leaders in development and structural biology of feathers. His group is interested in mapping phenotypic variation to the gene level. Feathers are one of their main research topics. They recently determined molecular and physical properties behind the variety of feather coloration in different bird species [7-9]. Last year, our groups started to collaborate to better understand the impact of cornification associated genes on feather development. This fruitful collaboration led already to an exchange of expertise and interesting results which will be published later this year. Furthermore, Miguel Carneiro’s group has regular access to different bird models on site, which ensures regular sample supply, and established HCR recently in his group which allowed me to learn from experienced colleagues. As Dr. Carneiro is the head of the Evolutionary Genetics and Genomics (EVOLGEN) group, I had the chance to work with experts in the field of evolutionary biology, which further shaped my scientific expertise, and allowed me to make new profession contacts relevant for future projects. During this FEBS short-term fellowship, I was able to successfully learn and apply HCR on our samples of interest which yielded new results of which our ongoing collaboration, but also my scientific career will benefit from.

If this inspires you to follow in Attila's foot steps you can apply here.

The FEBS Congress 2026: explore the plans

The build-up to the 50th FEBS Congress next July, hosted by the Netherlands Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (NVBMB), is gathering pace, with abstract submission and registration due to open on 1 November.  In the meantime, we invite you to explore the developing scientific programme on the Congress website, including an exciting plenary speaker line-up of distinguished researchers, parallel sessions covering traditional and emerging research areas, and a wide range of abstract submission topics for participants, who will have opportunities to present short talks, speed talks and posters. We are looking forward to bringing together molecular life scientists at all career stages and from across the globe for an inspiring few days in the Netherlands!

FEBS Young Scientists' Forum

The 25th FEBS Young Scientists’ Forum (‘YSF 2026’), a satellite meeting of the 50th FEBS Congress, will bring together in Wageningen around 100 talented postdocs and PhD students from FEBS countries working in the molecular and cellular life sciences. Participants will be able to meet up in a friendly international atmosphere for lectures from keynote speakers, short talks and posters from YSF attendees, sessions supporting scientific career development, and a social programme. YSF participants will then move on to also experience the larger 50th FEBS Congress in Maastricht.

FEBS will financially support participation of successful YSF applicants via YSF grants, covering registration, accommodation for both events, and most travel expenses. Applications will open on 1 November and close on 10 December 2025. Full details of the eligibility criteria are on the YSF applications page

FEBS Press

At FEBS Press we are conscious that the scientific community relies heavily on publishing and can therefore benefit from editors sharing the inner workings of the industry. Our editors have been very active on this front lately. Here are some of the events they were involved in.

Publishing skills are often taken for granted at universities, and early career researchers tend to feel lost when confronted with writing their first manuscript. Managing Editors Julija Hmeljak and Ruzhica Bogeska recently travelled to Varese, Italy, to hold a course on Publishing Skills for the PhD students and postdocs of the Università dell’Insubria. The full-day course was a great opportunity for students to learn about manuscript writing, publishing ethics and article promotion, among other things, and the editors were delighted to spend time with these bright emerging scientists talking about their favourite topics!

FEBS Letters staff recently attended the Susan Lindquist School on Proteostasis in Espoo, Finland; this fantastic EMBO-FEBS Lecture Course provided attendees with an overview of both the history of and recent advances in proteostasis, as presented by leaders in the field. The journal was pleased to support the meeting with prizes for the best posters. Managing Editor Duncan Wright also shared insights into academic publishing during one of the roundtable discussions.

The FEBS Journal team had the pleasure of attending two FEBS Advanced courses in September. Editor Yeliz Yilmaz attended the EMBO-FEBS Lecture Course "The evolving role of mitochondria in metabolism" held in Belgrade, where she had the opportunity to introduce FEBS Press Journals and talk about publishing with young scientists at the "Meet the PI" session. Additionally, the journal awarded a poster prize to a brilliant early-career researcher.

Managing Editor Julija Hmeljak attended the Practical & Lecture Course "Computational approaches to understanding and engineering enzyme catalysis” in Stockholm. This course was aimed primarily at early-career attendees, and Julija had several interesting discussions on how to choose the right journal for their (first) paper.

Molecular Oncology recently joined the annual European Association for Cancer (EACR) Congress in Lisbon, as its affiliated journal. Molecular Oncology editors met with the cancer research community to introduce the journal and various FEBS-specific initiatives prospective authors can be involved in. At the Molecular Oncology booth, there was particular interest in ‘The EACR-Molecular Oncology Editorial Fellowship’, aimed at early-career researchers interested in a career in scientific publishing (new call open until November 6th).

FEBS Open Bio Publishing Liaison officers recently attended the FEBS 3+ meeting in Belgrade, and the GBM Compact conference in Frankfurt, where they had the opportunity to talk to many attendees about the journal. FEBS Open Bio was pleased to continue its longstanding support to Early Career Researchers by sponsoring two poster prizes at the above meetings.

FEBS & NBS Joint Education Workshop
The FEBS & NBS Joint Education Workshop took place at the University of Bergen, Norway, on 18 and 19 September 2025. Under the theme “Teaching Large, Thinking Deep: Active Learning and Assessment in Expanding Classrooms,” the event brought together educators and early-career researchers to explore how to foster engagement and meaningful evaluation in biomedical education.

Over two days of talks, practical workshops, and interactive discussions, participants exchanged ideas and strategies on active learning, inclusive assessment, feedback literacy, and transferable skills, with a focus on improving how science is taught and learned.

Among the sessions at the workshop was “Science, Slides, and Stage Fright: A Survival Guide,” led by Ali Burak Özkaya as part of the transferable skills package for young researchers. His session explored how storytelling, design, and delivery strategies can help presenters move beyond perfection toward genuine connection.

In his follow-up article, “The Art of Connection: Lessons from the Bergen Workshop,” Ali Burak Özkaya reflects on the creative and human side of scientific communication, sharing key takeaways such as minimalism in slide design (less clutter, more focus), embracing imperfection as a path to authenticity, building structure and flow like acts in a play, starting with a strong hook that captures attention, and showing rather than telling through visuals and emotion.

FEBS | EMBO Women in Science Award 2026

The FEBS | EMBO Women in Science Award 2026 has been announced, honouring Carola García de Vinuesa, Principal Group Leader and Assistant Research Director at the Francis Crick Institute (UK). She is recognised for her pioneering discoveries on antibody responses and autoimmune diseases, and for her remarkable ability to connect science with society.

García de Vinuesa’s internationally acclaimed work has shed new light on the genetic and molecular basis of autoimmunity, opening up new perspectives for diagnosis and treatment. Beyond her research, she has played a leading role in public engagement, most notably through her involvement in the Kathleen Folbigg case in Australia, where genetic research helped overturn a major miscarriage of justice.

The award will be presented at the 50th FEBS Congress in Maastricht in July 2026, where García de Vinuesa will deliver a plenary lecture and take part in discussions with early-career researchers.

FEBS Press

The FEBS Press journals have a lot of exciting new content to share. You can find our top picks for the month here below.

Molecular Oncology

Circulating cell-free nucleic acids (cfDNA, cfRNA, miRNAs), along with components in extracellular vesicles (EVs) and cellular entities like circulating tumor cells (CTCs) and cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs), are becoming an invaluable source for liquid biopsy applications. Our latest thematic issue in Molecular Oncology features a curated selection of articles, that highlight diverse approaches utilized in liquid biopsy research and clinical applications pertinent to cancer. If you are interested into publishing your liquid biopsy research, check the open call for content here.

The journal has two more active calls for content in collaboration with the EACR on Cancer Neuroscience and Immuno-Oncology.

The FEBS Journal

Our Special Issue The Microbiome in Health and Disease brings together review-type articles from leading authors who summarise host–microbe interactions. As research progresses, harnessing the power of the microbiome may pave the way for novel diagnostic and therapeutic strategies, reaffirming the notion that we are never alone—our microbial fellow travellers accompany us through life, for better or worse.

FEBS Letters

FEBS Letters is pleased to announce a new special issue on Dendritic cells in health and disease, organised by guest editors Francesco Andreata (IRCCS San Raffaele Scientific Institute, Milan), Francesca Granucci (University of Milano-Bicocca, Milan), and Laura Marongiu (University of Milano-Bicocca). This exciting issue includes seven articles focussed on different aspects of dendritic cells, including their role in metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease and cancers, the use of IL-10-producing dendritic cells in immunotherapy, and the dual nature of TDC cells. The final two articles focus on methodological advice—vital reading for immunologists looking to get to grips with multiplexed imaging or single-cell RNA-seq analysis. Read the full issue for free at the above link.

FEBS Open Bio

Many non-coding RNAs (microRNA, long non-coding RNAs, and circular RNAs) can act as tumor suppressor genes or oncogenes to regulate tumor initiation and/or development. We invite you to read our latest Special Issue on Non-coding RNAs in cancer featuring four Review articles that showcase how recent technological advancements have accelerated our understanding of their potential  as cancer biomarkers and therapeutic targets.

We also invite you to check our newly open call for content on host-pathogen interactions here. We particularly invite contributions on technological advancements/new methodologies and/or research protocols. We look forward to your submission!
