Keep in mind when writing your resume

Tuesday, 08 June 2021 13:59

First impression goes a long way. The resume and cover letter are the first information you hand over to a recruiter. Mostly Employers only spend few minutes on your application to decide whether to invite you for an interview or not. Your resume and cover letter are your ticket to your ongoing application proceess.

A Basic rule: make it as easy as possible for the recruiter to find out that you are the right person for this job.

How can you make it more easy?

Well structured and easy to read

You can’t know what a recruiter will focus on first. Would it be your personal data, your education or your professional experience? Anyway, you can help them to quickly and easily find the information they are looking for with a well structured content.

Divide the information in paragraphs like

  • personal data,
  • professional development,
  • education and training,
  • skills

There are no strict rules about what information you disclose and how you structure it. Orientate on what you would prefer yourself if you had to read a resume. It makes sense to start with the personal data. Then graduates should continue with their education and then your internships. Experienced professionals go on with the professional development and add the training and highest graduation.

“You decide which information you share. Write down everything what’s important and leave out anything that does not boost your eligibility for the job.”

What kind of personal data should you share?

  •  Name, telephone number, email address – they are required to get in touch with you.
  • Nationality – it’s not required, but it might be of interest for the recruiter, because it can affect some labor laws or permissions.
  • The full address, gender, date of birth, civil status, number of children and religion can be added, but they need not to be.

How exactly should you specify a date?

It depends on your decision. It’s most usual to specify it monthly 09/2015 – 04/2019.

What’s about breaks or gaps in a resume?

Interruptions in a resume meanwhile hardly are a problem. They are very spread and you will not be excluded because of a gap as long as you can explain it believable. Ideally you can believable explain that you have sensefully used this time.

How detailed should you inform about your profession?

The position,

  • the duration
  • your main tasks,
  • your responsibilities.

If you achieved a special success on your job, then describe it. Tell about all what can point out your eligibility for the desired job and leave all off that doesn’t concern the job you strive on.

Should you list internships?

It depends on the professional experience you can fully offer, and if the internship points out your qualification for the requested job once more.

If you are a beginner, then it makes of course sense to list all internships and side jobs. You demonstrate to be familiar with different workspaces.

„Should you list a part-time job as a waitress or delivery service? when you are a graduate?”

“Yes” if you are at the beginning of your professional career and you cannot declare any other work experience. As a waitress you are forced to deal with different people in different situations. You have learned a lot about human behavior. Perhaps you are trained to work in stressful circumstances because of this job. Maybe you have learned to work in a team. Anyway, you’ve learned about the great demands of this job and you might appreciate your next job more.

How detailed should you describe education and training?

Limit it on the last at maximum two highest academic degrees. Add older educations only, if you can highlight a certain qualification which was not part of your academic education but is appropriate for the desired job.  E.G. an economic high school or of computer science.

Should you describe the content of the different lectures in detail?

„No“, only if the knowledge of a very specific method is required for the job you apply for.

How exactly should you describe a PhD thesis ( Master-, Bachelor-Thesis)

It depends on the job you are applying for. If your PhD thesis is relevant for the issues you will have to operate, then you should shortly describe it. If not, don’t do it. Then it would be enough to write down the title.

“How you should write your resume essentially depends on the job you are applying for. There are no rules that guarantee success as long as you follow them carefully and always.”
