This course will provide a broad coverage of modern aspects of ion channel and transporter research from single molecule biophysics up to studies involving whole organisms and human subjects. Lectures will cover the fundamental properties of ion channels as well as primary and secondary transporters (e.g. voltage-sensing, ion permeation, lipid regulation, transport mechanisms, role in disease), and methods used to study these proteins (e.g. patch clamp, X-ray crystallography, molecular dynamics, microscopy, optogenetics, high-throughput pharmacology). Young researchers will have many opportunities to present their own work through posters and data blitzes.
