PACT Summer School 2016 "Advanced Microscopy Techniques“

PACT organizes its second Summer School from 4 – 8 July 2016 in Vienna. Please visit http://www.pact.ac.at/ for details.

This year the School’s program will focus on various modern state-of-the-art microscopes that allow visualization of fine structures within cells and also their chemical composition. The plenary lectures will provide a general overview of super-resolution fluorescence microscopy and label-free Raman imaging while the hands-on sessions will address various relevant samples prepared by the participants either previously or during the course. Therefore, we strongly encourage candidates to bring their own slides or to propose samples to be imaged according to their research interests. School participants will form small groups of 4-5 people and rotate various microscope stations. Data evaluation/image processing will be part of the schedule as well as group discussions and networking opportunities with participants and trainers from different research fields.

Topics:

  • Barriers in fluorescence microscopy, novel techniques beyond the diffraction limit (Monika Debreczeny, University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna, Austria)
  • Increasing the spatial resolution in live cell imaging (Karl-Heinz Körtje, Leica Microsystems, Mannheim, Germany)
  • Wide-field based super-resolution fluorescence imaging (Thomas Peterbauer, Max F. Perutz Laboratories, Vienna, Austria)
  • Image processing, deconvolution (Doreen Milius, Institute of Science and Technology, Klosterneuburg, Austria)
  • Accessories, dyes, tools and tricks for sample preparation in super-resolution imaging (Tina Freisinger, ibidi GmbH, Planegg/Martinsried, Germany; Markus Schosserer, University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna, Austria; Karl-Heinz Körtje, Leica Microsystems, Mannheim, Germany)
  • Label-free chemical imaging based on a sample’s Raman spectrum: combining confocal microscopy and vibrational spectrometry (Bernd Bleisteiner, Horiba Jobin Yvon GmbH, Bensheim, Germany; Markus Schosserer, University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna, Austria)

School Credits: 2 ECTS

Please note: If you intend to receive an official report for this course, you have to co-register at BOKU.

Fee: 250 €

The fee includes tuition, a “welcome drink” on Monday evening (4 July 2016) and a Dinner on Thursday evening (7 July 2016). Accommodation and meals must be organized individually.

Course prerequisites:

Qualified master students as well as MScs, PhD/doctoral students and human or veterinarian medical doctors are invited to apply. In order to adress young scientists, we accept the application of postdocs with a max. 2-year old PhD diploma.

Practical experience with fluorescence microscopes is required!
