SUMMARY:Retina in a dish: Methods & applications in life sciences
LOCATION:Kuopio, Finland
DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE: Invitation and call for applications \n\n Dear fellow
scientist, \n \n\n We are delighted to invite you to the FEBS
Advanced Lecture Course 'Retina in a dish: Methods & applications i
n life sciences', hosted in the heart of Finnish Lakeland, in Kuopio, F
inland, June 2026.\n \n\n This immersive five-day course will explor
e retina as a powerful ex vivo model system not only for ophthalmology but
also for neuroscience, pharmacology, and translational research. Participan
ts will gain experience with organotypic retinal cultures as well as a
cute experiments in living retinas (ex vivo), and learn how to apply t
hem in disease modeling, drug testing, and gene therapy, as well as neurosc
ience research.\n A unique learning experience \n\n The reti
na’s accessibility, layered structure, and neurodevelopmental origin
make it an ideal model for studying central nervous system function and pat
hology. Through a combination of lectures, tutorials, and video demonstrati
ons, attendees will gain know-how on techniques such as retinal dissection,
culture maintenance, imaging, and electrophysiological recordings.\n \n
\n The course also includes sessions on publishing, grant writing, and
career development, and even recognizing bad science from good one(!), with
opportunities to receive feedback on abstracts, figures, and proposals. Ev
ening social events will foster collaboration and community among researche
rs from across Europe and beyond.\n Who should attend? \n\n
This course is designed for PhD students, postdocs, and early-career resear
chers working in visual neuroscience, ophthalmology, neuroscience, pharmaco
logy/toxicology, and related fields. Abstract submission is required for pa
rticipation, and selected attendees may be eligible for FEBS Youth Tra
vel Fund (YTF) Grants.\n Venue and atmosphere \n\n Nestled i
n the heart of Finnish Lakeland, Kuopio offers a tranquil and inspiring set
ting surrounded by shimmering lakes and lush forests. The course will take
place at the University of Eastern Finland’s Kuopio Campus, with lect
ures held in the modern Mediteknia auditorium. Participants will be accommo
dated at Scandic Hotel Kuopio, located less than a kilometer from the city&
rsquo;s central square and beautifully situated on the shores of Lake Kalla
vesi. The hotel is approximately 3 km from the campus and easily accessible
via regular public transport. Combining the natural charm of the region wi
th warm hospitality, Scandic Kuopio provides a comfortable and scenic base
for the course.\n \n\n ???? Application by March 31, 2026\n
\n\n ???? Poster deadline April 30, 2026\n \n\n \n On behalf
of the organizing committee,\n Henri Leinonen (main organizer)\n

nces’, taking place in Kuopio, Finland, 8–12 June 2026. This un
ique course brings together leading experts and early-career researchers in
ophthalmology, pharmacology/toxicology, visual neuroscience, and translati
onal research. Partnering with us offers your company excellent visibility
and the opportunity to support cutting-edge science. Sponsors will gain vis
ibility during the event (e.g., course materials), and on the course websit
