SUMMARY:Lost in integration vol. 2 – Probing biomolecules with AI and experiments
LOCATION:Spetses Island, Greece
DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:	The course at a glance\n\n	Dear aspiring structural biologists,\n\n\n	We a
re thrilled to invite you to the FEBS Advanced Course, Lost in Integra
tion Vol. 2 - probing biomolecules with AI and experiments w
hich will take place from May 10 – 16, 2026 on the idyllic island of
Spetses in Greece. The course is aimed at PhD candidates and postdocto
ral researchers interested in integrative structural biology. \n\n\n	I
ntegrative structural biology is an interdisciplinary field that has seen e
xplosive growth due to technological revolution in biological structure ana
lysis. This field incorporates a wide range of techniques and advanced comp
utational and machine learning approaches. When integrated, these technique
s provide insights beyond static molecular structures, revealing dynamic in
teractions and behaviours that are crucial for understanding biology and bi
omedical research. Simply put, traditional structural biology has provided
high-resolution images of biomolecules but is limited to static representat
ions; integrative structural biology allows researchers to observe molecula
r movement and interactions in real-time within their biological environmen
ts. It also brings into light entire new classes of biomolecules—in p
articular, those that are dynamic and difficult to study as well as complex
es of ever-increasing sizes. Thus, integrative structural biology not only
expands the range of methods used to study molecular structure and function
, but also substantially expands the scope of problems that can be addresse
d. \n\n\n	At this course, students will learn to understand, use, and
interpret data from a multitude of different techniques including cryo-elec
tron microscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, X-ray crystallogr
aphy, cryo-electron tomography, small-angle X-ray scattering, mass spectrom
etry, and single-molecule methods such as optical tweezers and Förster
resonance energy transfer. Further, students will learn how to integrate d
ata using advanced computational and machine learning techniques. \n\n
\n	The course will include plenary lectures by esteemed scientists, poster
sessions, panel discussions, journal club, group discussions, and a mentori
ng session led by Professor Emeritus Jane Clarke (University of C
ambridge). These sessions will allow participants to receive practical feed
back on their research projects, both from their peers and the participatin
g senior scientists. In addition to the scientific activities, social dinne
rs and an excursion around the island will also be organized. \n\n\n	T
he small, idyllic island of Spetses is a part of Saronic Islands archipelag
o and easy to reach from Athens by ferry. Spetses has numerous restaurant a
nd excursion possibilities within walking distance at a very affordable pri
ce \n\n\n	Places are limited to 44 students and the cost of the course
will be 500 EUR. To help facilitate participation, there are 8 FEBS Y
outh Travel Fund Grants available to help cover registration fees and
travel expenses.\n\n\n	We look forward to welcoming you in 2026.\n\n\n	Birt
he B. Kragelund, Gregers Rom Andersen, Kresten Lindorff-Larsen and Rasmus K
ock Flygaard\n	Course Organizers\n\n\n	This course is organised in collabor
ation with the Integrative Structural Biology cluster at the University of
Copenhagen (ISBUC) and the Aarhus University Structural Biology and Biophys
ics Initiative (AUSBI).\n\n\n	\n \n\n\n \n
