 re&nbsp;\n\n\n	\n	Abstract:&nbsp;&nbsp;\n	\n	Newer-to-nature building block
 s such as non-standard amino acids (nsAA) can expand the repertoire&nbsp;\n
 	of chemistries and functions that living systems can produce. However, rel
 iance on chemical&nbsp;\n	synthesis of nsAAs introduces several kinds of co
 nstraints that impact the costs and contexts where&nbsp;\n	nsAAs can be use
 d. In this talk, I will describe how biosynthesis of nsAAs can create new c
 apabilities&nbsp;\n	and safeguards for microbial engineering, including app
 lications towards live vaccines or controlled&nbsp;\n	release of microbes i
 nto the environment. I will also describe how one-pot semi-synthesis and&nb
 sp;\n	incorporation of nsAAs within proteins can be an attractive alternati
 ve for industrial maturation of&nbsp;\n	genetic code expansion (GCE) techno
 logies in biomanufacturing, including a route for synthesis of&nbsp;\n	enco
 dable L-phenylalanine derivatives that we have developed in in cell-free an
 d cellular formats.&nbsp;\n	Overall, these research directions at the inter
 face of metabolic engineering and chemical biology lay&nbsp;\n	the groundwo
 rk for accelerating industrial adoption of, and unlocking new opportunities
  for, GCE for&nbsp;\n	the benefit of human and planetary health.&nbsp;\n	\n
