The Institute of Biotechnology and Biochemical Engineering is the main Austrian university institution
for basic and applied research at the interface of biological sciences and process engineering. The
aim is to achieve innovative solutions for efficient and accelerated process development in biotech-
nology using an integrated scientific-technological approach that combines modern methods of mo-
lecular and process bioengineering. The research activities are focused on three main fields: applied
enzymology and enzyme technology; metabolic and reaction engineering for biocatalysis and renew-
able resource utilization; and glycobiotechnology.

 
POSITION

The field of the offered position (Applied Enzymology and Enzyme Technology) is one of the main
focus areas of the Institute in research and teaching. The position is available in the research team
of Prof. Bernd Nidetzky and will cover mechanistic and applied studies of carbohydrate-active en-
zymes. The research will be performed as a collaborative effort with strong links to major research
initiatives in Graz in the fields of molecular enzymology, industrial biotechnology and pharmaceutical
engineering. The position will also involve teaching at the graduate and undergraduate level in labor-
atory and lecture courses of general biotechnology and enzyme technology.

 

 

REQUIREMENTS

 A PhD in chemistry, molecular biology, biotechnology, biochemical engineering or a related field is
required. Experience at the postdoctoral level is an advantage. Candidates must have their prior re-
search documented in scientific publication(s). A solid background in basic and applied aspects of
(bio)chemistry is needed. Expertise/knowledge of state-of-the-art techniques in protein chemistry and
enzymology is important. Experience in the application of enzymes and in enzymatic reaction engi-
neering is also important. The candidate should have interest and ideally also experience in translat-
ing results of basic research into technological/engineering applications.
Candidates must have excellent skills in spoken and written English, and interpersonal skills for pro-
ductive team work and group research efforts.
