PhD Thesis “Plasmonic Biosensor for Single Molecule Analysis”

  • Our AIT-PhD Programme is carried out in cooperation with national or international universities and research institutes. It offers you the opportunity to conduct your dissertation in collaboration with our experts and our national and international project partners.
  • This PhD project is scheduled for three years and is part of the bilateral research project "DIPLAP" supported by the Austrian Science Fund and Czech Science Foundation.

 

Engage
  • The goal of this PhD thesis is to carry out a novel concept of optical biosensor for interrogating of single molecules that are specifically captured at the solid sensor surface. It is based on enzyme-free amplification strategy that utilizes analyte-binding triggered converting of fluorophore labels from their dark to bright state for efficient surface plasmon-enhanced fluorescence readout.
  • You will focus on the development of new polymer biointerfaces with precise spatial control of functionalization on the optical biochip surface, implementation of respective metallic nanostructures for sensitive optical readout, and the utilization of functional assays relevant to cancer diagnostics based on detection of methylated DNA.
  • You will be supported by your colleagues operating in the field of nanophotonics and optical spectroscopy, researchers pursuing synthetic chemistry for development of a polymer toolkits, and molecular biologists active in cancer research.
  • You will contribute to development of a new class of analytical techniques with unpreceded sensitivity for rapid detecting of chemical and biological species that is capable to operate in real world samples.

  • You will be responsible for design, carrying out, and evaluating of scientific studies and for dissemination of the results through publishing scientific papers and active presentations at conferences.
  • Through your research, you will have the chance to become scientific expert in your field, will be able to build your own scientific network and be in constant contact with an international research community.

 

Your qualifications as an Ingenious Partner*:
  • Master studies in the field of physical chemistry, materials research or physics
  • Experience with optical techniques for investigation of interfaces, optical spectroscopy, optical affinity biosensors, nanotechnology, lithography, and nanostructure characterization
  • Interest in scientific and interdisciplinary teamwork.
  • Ability to communicate and work in a team, willingness to work independently and responsibly
  • Enthusiasm for research and unconventional solutions, creativity and visionary power
  • Very good English knowledge, spoken and written; German knowledge would be an advantage


What to expect:
EUR 31.326,40 gross per year for 30 hours/week based on the collective agreement. There will be additional company benefits. You will be part of our international AIT PhD community and participate in our AIT PhD framework program. As a research institution, we are familiar with the supervision and execution of PhD theses and we are looking forward to supporting you accordingly!
