at the Joint Microbiome Facility
of the University of Vienna and Medical University of Vienna

A new joint microbiome facility will be established by the University of Vienna (UV) and the Medical University of Vienna (MUV). The facility will be located at the campus of the general hospital of Vienna (AKH). We are searching for a senior scientist with outstanding expertise in bioinformatic next-generation-sequencing methods relevant to the study of complex microbial communities.

 

The Position is currently limited to 1 year with the possibility of subsequent long-term employment.

 

Duratlon of employment: 1 year/s

 

Extent of Employment: 40 hours/week

 

Job grading in accordance with collective bargaining agreement: §48 VwGr. B1 lit. b (postdoc) with relevant work experience determining the assignment to a particular salary grade.

 

Job Description:
As a senior scientist for Bioinformatics, the candidate will contribute to the day-to-day research as well as technical development at the Joint Microbiome Facility of the Medical University of Vienna and the University of Vienna. A major responsibility will be to design, implement and update bioinformatics pipelines and customized bioinformatics analyses in the area of microbiome research.

The successfui applicant will also communicate with other bioinformaticians and Facility users and collaborators to manage data curation and analysis for diverse projects, and be involved in the publication of results in international peer-reviewed Journals.

Profile:
Successful candidates must have a doctoral degree in bioinformatics, microbiology or a related discipline, preferentially relevant post-doc research experience (international experience is preferred) and a track record of publications in international peer-reviewed journals. A comprehensive knowledge of state-of-the-art methods in bioinformatics is required, including expertise in the following areas:

  • Statistical analysis and data visualization in R

  • One or more high-level scripting/programming languages (e.g. Perl, Python, C, etc.)

  • Experience using a computational cluster including job scheduling (e.g. Torque, Slurm, etc.) and maintaining environmental modules

  • Experience working with public data repositories including NCBI, ENA and DOE-IMG. The ability to interface through APIs is preferred

  • Experience using phylogenetic methods

  • Experience writing scripts to process and analyze date produced from massively-parallel sequencing including amplicon, shotgun metagenomics and metatranscriptomic datasets

  • Experience preparing scientific manuscripts and presenting scientific results at international scientific conferences

A strong background in microbiology/microbial communities/microbial ecology is preferred.

Good communications skills in English (written and spoken) are mandatory and communication skills in German are preferred. The ability to work in a team is essential.
