Dear Colleagues -

Please join me for the 2017 Society for Glycobiology Annual Meeting being held in Portland, Oregon on November 5-8. Portland, the largest city in the state of Oregon, sits at convergence of the Willamette and Columbia Rivers, in sight of majestic Mt. Hood. Known for its innovative and highly acclaimed food scene, microbreweries, nearby wineries, and ready access to outdoor adventure, Portland exudes big city excitement and small town charm. Our meeting will be held at the Hilton Portland & Executive Tower in the heart of downtown, an easy and inexpensive ride on the Max Light Rail Red Line from Portland international Airport. This meeting venue, smaller than in the past, will provide an intimate setting for what I anticipate will be a very exciting multi-disciplinary meeting.

Our theme this year is Glycobiology-Inside and Outside of the Box: Collaborations Across Disciplines. I have two goals for this meeting: (1) to illustrate ground-breaking collaborations between glycobiologists and scientists in other fields, and (2) to engage scientists using glycobiology in their research who have not previously attended or spoken at a SFG meeting. With these goals in mind, I have organized six collaborative talks where two scientists share the stage to talk about their joint research, and with the help of many of you, identified and invited several scientists who have never spoken at the SFG meeting before! There will be ample slots for shorter poster talks and opportunities for junior investigators, trainees and those new to the field to introduce their work. Please encourage your colleagues, students and postdocs to attend!

Meeting session topics and speakers include:

Glycans in metabolic regulation and development

K. Moremen (chair), J. Esko & M. Poli, C. Manzini, J. Hart & O. Lagerlöf

Glycan biosynthesis and function

N. Dahms (chair), S. Haslam & M. Shoulders, T. Gerken, A. Lindstedt, R. Haltiwanger & V. Luca

Glycan-related diseases and disorders I

S. Bellis (chair), R. Gilmore & J. Contessa P. Argüeso, L. Xia

Glycolipids in health and disease

A. Menon (speaker and chair), C. Lingwood, N. Ruiz

Glycans in pathogenesis and infection

C. West (speaker and chair), L. Weiss, M. Ozbun, C. Parrish

Expect the unexpected from microbes

C. Szymanski (speaker and chair), J. Kohler, A. Boraston

Glycoengineering and glycan related therapeutics

D. Jarvis (chair), H. Steinkellner, M. DeLisa, R. Cummings

Glycan-related diseases and disorders II (Chair: Stuart Haslam)

S. Haslam (chair), L. Wells & C. Schwartz, J. Burchell, M. Tiemeyer

Another highlight of this year's meeting is a Trainee Mentoring Session being held on Sunday November 5 from 9-3 pm before the formal meeting begins. We want to engage undergraduate students, graduate students and postdocs from glycobiology labs across the country, and from colleges and universities in Portland, in discussions about how to successfully navigate each stage of training and how to prepare for various career options open to them as scientists, and particularly as glycobiologists. As part of this session, trainees will have an opportunity to interact with more senior scientists who have pursued different career paths. Junior scientists or trainees new to the field will also have the option of participating in a “big sibling” mentoring program during the meeting, and all participants will be able to sign up to meet one-on-one with senior scientists whose research interests them.

Become a member of the Society for Glycobiology! Finally, I want to encourage all participants to take advantage of the benefits of being a member of the SFG. Joining the Society provides a substantial discount on meeting registration, a discounted subscription to our journal Glycobiology, and membership in FASEB. Some students may also be eligible for the FASEB MARC Travel Award. In addition, the SFG provides travel awards to students and postdocs who would like to attend the annual meeting. The guidelines for the travel awards are given on the SFG website and can be seen by clicking directly on the Awards Programs.

Please view our program below. The meeting registration, hotel accommodations and abstract submission sites are now open on our webpage at www.glycobiology.org. I hope you are able to join us for this stimulating glyco-centric, multi-disciplinary meeting in the beautiful Pacific Northwest!

Sincerely,

Karen Colley
