DEBRA Austria is the national charity that supports individuals and families affected by Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) – a painful genetic skin blistering condition which, in the worst cases, can be fatal. DEBRA Austria is seeking a

 

Research Manager

 

to manage its program of supporting research into the condition, and to represent DEBRA Austria in its collaborations with external partners to develop new treatments for people with EB. This is an opportunity for a person with in-depth understanding and experience of academic and clinical biomedical research, and its funding, who is looking to develop incremental responsibility in a senior role representing both the charity, and the interests of all people with EB, in Austria and internationally.

Responsible for:

  • Management of the portfolio of research funded by DEBRA Austria (contracting, monitoring, progress reporting, financial management)
  • Initiation and development of novel research-funding schemes meeting DEBRA Austria’s strategic priorities.
  • Management of DEBRA Austria’s in-house research team
  • Management of the DEBRA Austria  – EB Haus Austria (centre of expertise) collaboration
  • Collaborative working with DEBRA International Head of Research
  • Development of relationships with other potential supporters of EB research (government, charities, and other individuals and groups with Austria and internationally).

 

Expertise and qualifications, mandatory:

  • In depth understanding and experience of the processes and practice of biomedical research, and the principles of competitive research funding.
  • In-depth understanding, or experience, of the therapy-development pathway from fundamental and preclinical research through clinical trials to clinical application.
  • Experience of working and communicating with external international advisory boards, and senior personnel in university and hospital administration.
  • Experience of working with researchers at all levels (PhD student to Professor), and the ability to communicate appropriately.
  • To be innovative in proposing and implementing effective initiatives to further EB research, and its translation to the clinic.
  • Understanding of the principles of intellectual property and its protection and exploitation (in-depth knowledge of negotiating, contracting and technology transfer is not necessary)
  • Excellent written and spoken English and German.

 

Expertise and qualifications, desirable:

  • PhD, or equivalent level of demonstrated expertise and experience in biomedical research
  • Experience of:
    • having applied for research grants personally
    • managing a research team, or a senior role (at least postdoc) within a team
    • managing grants from the perspective of funding body
    • collaborative management of a small team with shared responsibilities, both within team and with other teams.

  • Tenacious but diplomatic, ability to understand different perspectives and priorities of external partners, and to work with them.

  • This post has a starting salary of EUR 35.000,- to 45.000,- gross p.a. (based on a full-time role, 40 hours / week), with supplemental payments subject to qualifications and professional experience.
