- Site visit Univ Vienna (Althanstrasse) Metabolomics and proteomics
The genome-scale analysis of metabolites and proteins of a cell or a biological system – have developed within the last decade into indispensable technologies of applied biosciences in plant biotechnology, biomedical approaches, ecology and systems biology projects. During the visit of the Department of Molecular Systems Biology (MOSYS) mass spectrometric techniques and instruments will be introduced that are crucial for state-of-the-art metabolomics and proteomics analysis. Applications of these research fields will be presented, comprising data integration, statistics and systems biology approaches.

- Site visit - Department of NanoBiotechnology (BOKU) AFM microscopes
Nanoscale surface analysis of living cells represents a challenge of current microbiology and biophysics critical for developing new biotechnological and biomedical applications. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) has emerged as a powerful tool for imaging cell surfaces under physiological conditions and at nanometer resolution. It allows observing biological surfaces in their native environment. Chemical force microscopy (CFM) and single-molecule force spectroscopy allow mapping chemical groups and receptors on cell surfaces. It is also possible to examine the energy landscape of biomolecular reactions, as well as reaction pathways, associated lifetimes, and free energy. The single-cell assay should be expandable for screening and quantification of the crosstalk between cell adhesion molecules and other cell surface receptors.

- Site visit - Department of Biotechnology (BOKU)
Large-scale production of recombinant proteins for clinical application is one of the key areas in Biotechnology and Bioengineering. During the visit of the “Technikum” of the Department of Biotechnology, a glance is given to the biotechnological production plant where anti-HIV antibodies for clinical applications have been produced.
